Fall into Family History with VGA’s Virtual Genealogical Conference!

I love a good pun and I am not ashamed. Especially one involving my favorite season of Fall! This time of year is always a special one for me. The changing leaves, cooler temperatures, family events and alllllll the pumpkins, make me feel so grateful and nostalgic. I have also noticed the productivity in my own family research increases during this time. Perhaps it’s all the positive vibes I am feeling, or maybe the ancestors are calling?

Which is why I am so excited to tell you about one of this Fall’s must attend genealogical events, the Virtual Genealogical Association’s 2019 Virtual Conference this November 1st -3rd! Guys and gals, ladies and gents, you DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS INCREDIBLE VALUE!! First, because it is virtual you do not have to pay for expensive flights and hotels. No travel stress! Second, the registration fee is unbeatable for a THREE DAY event, at $59 for VGA members and $79 for non-members!

For someone like myself who both works and moms full time, it is often difficult to go to many of the wonderful large national conferences. This is a great opportunity for those who may have similar time, financial constraints, or whose health may make travel more difficult. Even if none of these factors are an issue for you, this is still an amazing line-up for an immersive three days in genealogy!

Now that I have your undivided attention, let me tell you more! The speakers for this event are some of the best and most sought after in the field. Blaine Bettinger, genetic genealogy expert, will present Identifying Your DNA Matches’ Secret Identity, and will also present Using DNA Shared Matching for Success. Ari Wilkins will present Incorporating Oral History Into Your Research, a topic and practice that I personally feel is incredibly important. She was one of my brilliant instructors this summer at the Texas Institute of Genealogical Research and I so enjoyed learning from her!

Jen Baldwin will present, Find My Past: Your Source for British and Irish records. As my ancestry is largely British with some Scottish and Irish, I am really exited about learning more on how to utilize Find My Past resources.

Nicka Smith will present on the history and rewards of running the must-see YouTube show, BlackProGen LIVE! Y’all, this is one of my favorite genealogy programs. Nicka and her panel of experts are top notch! They tackle some important stuff both genealogically but also as it relates to correcting the historical narratives of our country. If you have African American ancestry, or you have ancestors who were enslavers (like myself) and want to know more about research in this area, this show is a MUST.

There are so many other amazing presenters at this conference! Judy Russell! Dan Earl! Christine Woodcock! Bernice Bennett! Peggy Clemens Lauritzen! AND MORE. Check out the schedule!

And now for the BEST PART OF THIS POST! Drum roll….

If you aren’t already a member of VGA, you should definitely consider joining. It is a global organization serving family history enthusiasts of all levels, geared towards those:

  • Whose circumstances make it difficult to attend local genealogical society meetings
  • Who prefer online presentations, special interest groups (SIGs), conferences, and socializing
  • With an interest in connecting, networking, and mentoring with global genealogists.

Membership is an exceedingly affordable $20. If you join, you’ll get the discounted member registration rate for the conference AND access to all the monthly VGA programming, for the same cost if you register without being a member. Outstanding monthly virtual presentations will allow you to grow in your genealogical knowledge and skills, all from the comfort and convenience of your home, local coffee shop, or wherever you may be located.

I’m looking forward to the networking at this conference over social media and hope to meet you virtually!

Happy researching!
